    Description

Stunning Vintage Scottish Sterling Silver Dawson Bowman Luckenbooth Brooch 4.1g
This beautiful Scottish hallmarked brooch is really stunning. The style of brooch is known as a
"Luckenbooth" and was traditionally given as betrothal gift or love token. Ancient folklore stories consider the brooch to be lucky, protecting the wearer from evil and easing the pain of childbirth. The origins of the brooch are thought to originate to the time of Mary Queen of Scots and was designed specifically for her wedding with hearts and crown.
This lovely example was made in Scotland by Hamish Dawson Bowman (DB), a well known Scottish silversmith who founded "CAI" - Celtic Art Industries in 1945. The silver hallmark for Edinburgh and makers stamp on this piece date it to 1970 but it could have been made earlier. This finely made piece retains original fully functional locking clasp, Victorian style tubular hinge and pin stem. Under close inspection, I noticed the clasp is just slightly dipping in the lock position and may need a small repair, it is in otherwise good condition.
