IT DATES FROM THE LATE 1800'S - EARLY 1900'S.It measures approximately 4'' long in 1''wide. 16grThe Fibula Pendant features detailed wire-work (see the photos) It is in good condition with age and use. a fibula – an elaborately decorated pin traditionally used by Berber women from Morocco to hold their garments in place. The fibula, meaning “to fasten” in Latin, is decorated with colourful glass cabochons set in a raised bezel setting and enamelling. The use of fibula or clothing fasteners stems from before Roman times; the tradition survived in the Maghreb, where clothing is fastened in much the same way in which it was done around 2000 years ago. However, the style of fibulas has evolved and changed over time: nowadays each region has its own distinct style. In addition to its functional use, the fibula is a form of adornment for Berber women, a significant feature for these women who are always well adorned. Elaborately decorated fibula (amongst other forms of jewellery) are often given to Kabyle women from Northern Algeria at marriage as a gift from their parents and as part of their dowry.
