Description
This coin was issued in1863 AD
in the
last stage of the First Republic
of Mexico (1824-
1864
) in Mexico City.
The
Liberal Reform
promulgated a new
Constitution of 1857
, separating Church and State, stripping the Conservative
institutions of the Church and the military of their special privileges. Conservatives revolted, touching off civil war
between rival Liberal and conservative governments (
1858-1861
).
The Liberals defeated the Conservative army
on the
battlefield, but Conservatives sought another solution to gain power via foreign intervention
by the French
.
Mexican conservatives asked Emperor
Napoleon III
to
place a European monarch
as head of the state in Mexico.
The French Army defeated the Mexican Army and
placed Maximilian Hapsburg (1864-1867)
on the newly established
throne of Mexico.
Mexico City is both
the oldest capital city
in the Americas and one of two
founded by indigenous people.
The city was
originally built on an island of Lake Texcoco
by the Aztecs in 1325
as
Tenochtitlan
, which was almost
completely
destroyed in the 1521
Siege of Tenochtitlan and rebuilt in accordance
with the Spanish urban standards
.
