Description
This is a still attractive, fully original, well-worn veteran, but the earliest date,
“Resplendado”
or
"Cap and Rays"
Two Reales from the
"First Republic"
of Mexico. It was struck at the Mexico City mint and dated 1825 during the Presidency of Guadalupe Victoria. He was the first President of the
“First Republic”
of Mexico.
When Mexico became independent of Spain in 1821, it initially became the
“First Empire”
of Mexico under the
“Emperor”
Agustín de Iturbide. He and his
“Empire”
only lasted until 1823 when he abdicated. After a short period of
“Provisional Government”
Guadalupe Victoria was elected President of what turned out to be the
“First Republic of Mexico”
.
Later, in the 1860’s after the French invasion, the
“Second Empire”
of Mexico was formed under the Austrian Archduke Maximilian. After Maximilian faced his firing squad, it was followed by the
“Second Republic”
under its First President, Benito Juárez.
Weight: 5.97 Grams, 28 Millimeters, .903 Silver. Mintage: Unknown.

This, the national symbol of Mexico, stands for the Aztec legend that foretold they were to make a great empire in a marshy area where they would see a cactus with an eagle standing on it eating a snake. The site where this actually happened is now Mexico City.

Mexico used the medieval system of dineros and granos to measure the fineness of their coins, twelve dineros designating pure silver with each dinero divided into 24 granos. A coin of 10 dineros 20 granos equated to .902777 fine.
The Coin:
A long serving veteran, it saw many hands and earned its wear. Thankfully, no one ever cleaned it. As well as in Mexico, these were welcomed and circulated in the United States until 1857, and longer in the west. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
